Quarter Title Poll 15 Years, 6 Months ago

Hey guys,
So i was chatting with a few people when discussing about realigning the quarter titles with the calender and a member mentioned different ways we can name awards. I'm going to put this to you guys and we'll base it on how many answers we get by the time Sunday rolls around.
Right now we title everythign Dokuga Awards 2nd Quarter 2009 or Dokuga Awards 3rd Quarter 2009 to identify which quarter in the year your fics won.
We can keep that, minus this round which will be 2nd quarter 2.0 because i'm realigning.
Or the member suggested naming them like superbowls. Dokuga Awards VII, Dokuga Awards VIII, Dokuga Awards IX.
Normally we would just make a decision, but both Miss K and I can go either way and see the merits in both. So we're ptuting this to you. Reply to this post and tell me which you prefer...and if you have a reason you want to state, you can say so as well. We'll make the final decision, but I want to hear what you guys have to say about it.

I think that naming them with roman numbers will be good for events done annually, not quarterly. One can get lost in numbers that will come up later(like XLI, will ne confused with size )

I like the roman numbers to tell you the truth although what oksana says is true people might get lost in the larger numbers. But that doesn't change the fact that I think it would be prettier with them.

I like the old way better. I agree that the roman numerals would work better on a yearly basis rather than a quarterly basis, and I also agree that they might become confusing as the numbers climb.

I don't think the Roman numerals would work well at all. Would we go back to the beginning and rename the first year and a half of awards? If Yes, then the winning banners will all have incorrect labels. If No, the inconsistency will drive the OCD sufferer in me up a tree. But mostly I think the Roman numerals would be clumsy and confusing; years with quarterly divisions are logical and informative.

I can only understand 1-3 & 10 in roman numerals so... (always get a little confused with the 6 and the 4)

well you can always title them like bad sequels to the movies...for example.
Dokuga Awards: The Revenge. you get the picture.

Just my 2 cents.
I think you should keep the old method (i.e., 2nd Quarter, 3rd Quarter, etc.) I agree with a previous post. The roman numeral method would work best if the time interval between awards was different (i.e., yearly instead of quarterly). Yeah, the quarter you'll need to adjust with the 2.0 (or whatever you decide) might look odd, but that's an exception it seems. Everything should work out after that point.
Edit:

Is this just for the authors opinions?
I am not an author, but, I feel I must agree with Oksana and PirateQueen0405.
Though the roman numerals represent strength and do look good in representation, are you planning to change all previous award numbers? If so, than all the banners already made will need to be changed or look unprofessional AND if you are going to have the numbers climb most viewers will become confused as we all are not knowledgable of roman numerals.
So I think you should leave it as it is. As the old adage says,"If it's not broke, don't fix it".

These are all awesome answers. Let me give you some perspective on why we're having the debate.
1. old system. allows for tracking when it comes to quarters so you know what year and quarter your fic won in.
2. roman numerals. For people who think in numbers, ie our site mistress, it's easier tracking for them. it's not so much about an aesthetics perspective, but a tracking perspective.
That being said, i'm looking at all of these and will take all of your comments into consideration. If things do change, we will not be grandfathering it. I'll let you know when we open for nominations what it is we will be doing.

Maybe you could always keep the numbers for Miss K, and then give it a bad movie subtitle like Rose suggested.
Dokuga Awards (insert some big long number here): Revenge of the Fluff

i think that roman numerals would work the only problem is with the higher numbers/letters. However, if it is advertised correctly, i think that it would work out really well. Make sure that if you do do the roman numerals, that its written out in words too just underneath on the first post, that would probably help. I'm all for it.

I don't really see an intense need to rename the quarters. I think that the old system works well and makes it easy to know what quarter and year a fic was nommed and/or won.
If you do decide to rename, then we need to get away from numbers completely, and go to something that everyone is familiar with - i.e. Dokuga Summer, Dokuga Fall, Dokuga Spring, etc.
But - I still think we shouldn't mess with renaming.

I'm alright with the old way, honestly speaking, and I agree that the RNs will get pretty confusing as the numbers get up there. Plus, I'm pretty used to the old way too, and it's easy to tell when the award was given and won.
Though I'm willing to go either way.

all of y'all are wonderful with your replies!
Okay, so i'm settling on a compromise. For database and site purposes, we're going with numbers. For actual titles, however, we'll keep with quarters. So you may see some reference to numbers, but that's because it's nicer on our database and our site mistress. But for all intents and purposes, banners, etc, will be labelled with quarters.
I'm still realigning with the calender so this is 2.0, don't forget, not 3rd Quarter 2009.
