Balance by Feckless

Chapter One

Balance? He seeked balance of the life she stolen from him, but she didn't know how to give it to him. She couldn't...

She shook. He was just lying there, lifeless. Tears started to well up in the corners of her blue eyes, clouding her vision.

Wiping her eyes with the back of her trembling hand, the accident played over and over in her head.

He was just kneeling on the pavement when she arrived, his back to her. She tilted her head up and took a deep breath, firmly placing her hands on the steering wheel.

She looked back at the fallen man. He had a black hood over his head, making it impossible for anyone to see his face, but she could make out the crimson substance pooling around him mingling with the pouring rain. She could see it leaking from under the hood; most likely from the head wound she gave him.

The pavement was dyed a deathly red as the liquid made contact.

'I have to get away.'

Steadying her breath and her hands, she shifted the car into drive and sped her way home.

Once home she was still finding it incredibly hard to control her labored breathing. Without much of a thought she started pacing, her mind blank on what to do next.

'I should call someone... but no. They wouldn't understand!'

Sitting down on her soft plush couch, she buried her face in her hands. Wanting desperately to hide from what just happened. Flopping to the side, she curled into a fetal position.

'Higurashi Kagome. Most unfortunate girl in the world.'

She silently fell into a troubled sleep.

---

She was awaken the next morning by the phone. On pure reflex she leaned over and snatched the receiver from its cradle.

"Hello?" Her's voice was only a mumble from sleep.

"Did you get home alright last night?" Sango questioned, her voice clearly showing concern.

Kagome's mouth flapped open, ready to give an answer, but the words refused to come out. She kept seeing the lifeless man in the middle of the street.

"There was a huge storm yesterday, I'm surprised you even found your way home." Sango paused half expecting Kagome to say something, but when the other girl did not answer, she continued. "I'm sorry about all that extra work you had to do. You must have been there until midnight yesterday. Oh lord I didn't wake you did I?"

Kagome sat there for a moment processing everything that had just been said.

"I was only at work until ten'thirty, but next time, please schedule your dates so that it wouldn't interfere with your work."

Her voice was beginning to shake at the end.

"Girl are you alright? Did anything happen last night?" Sango spoke. The girl on the other end did not sound like the Kagome she knew.

It felt like she had a frog lodged in her throat, preventing her from making steady sentences. "No, of course not. Nothing happened."

She had been trying her hardest to sound more convincing then she felt, but she fell short.

Sango paused for a few moments, pondering over her friend's change in behavior. Putting on the sweetest voice she could muster she uttered,"please don't lie to me, Kagome, unless you're absolutely sure I'll never find the truth."

Kagome couldn't help but smile at this. "Yeah. I'm sure." It came out more like a sigh.

"Don't hesitate to call if you need anything." Sango commanded swiftly, causing Kagome to giggle. She agreed.

Saying their goodbyes, she hung up the phone. She hated to lie to her best friend, but she really had no choice.

She carefully laid her head back down trying to sooth away her worries.

"Little girl." An unfamiliar voice called causing her to whip around. Her breath caught in her thought at what she saw.

'But that's impossible.'
