In the Moonlight by Dawn

Part One

The cathedral bells could be heard all over the city. Their melodic chimes were carried in the wind, and they told the entire world it was the witching hour. The streets were filled with people, for such a late hour. The crowd was so dense that an onlooker would think it was a thick forest of people, and would scarcely notice a young girl jogging along the streets.

Kagome dodged this way and that, trying to get out of the crowd. Finally, she saw an alley she was very familiar with. Kagome ran through it with ease, and quickly came out on the otherside. She looked around and saw that the street was completely barren, and a cold shiver ran up and down her body. She ignored the eerie feeling, and continued to walk. She heard the chimes, and sighed. It was midnight. With all her might she wished that there was someone at home, tapping their foot, because her curfew had ended hours ago, but no that would never be.

There was no one left. Her family was dead, and she was the last. The Higurashi's had been wiped out, one by one, and she was the only one left. There would be no one left to care for her,and there would be no one at home, anxiously awaiting her return. She was all alone.

The city park came into view, and she decided to stroll through it. A forebodding feeling came over her, but she disregarded it as her imagination. The moonlight lit up the old park, and Kagome enjoyed reminiscing about the days of her childhood, when she and her brother use to play here. She could almost hear his little angelic voice laughing happily. She closed her eyes, and remembered everything.

She was so caught up in her reverie that she didn't notice a pair of golden eyes watching her.The person, to whom the eyes belonged, soundlessly went up to her. He was about her, before she had time to react. Her eyes flew open when she felt the attacker's arms around her. Kagome wanted to struggle, but he held her so tightly. Her chocolate orbs darted up, and they met gold.

She gasped; her captor could only be described as one thing, beautiful. If ever a man could be. His skin was deathly pale, and three stripes decorated each of his cheeks.Silvery locks that shone in the moonlight fell past her shoulders, but the thing that stole her breath were those bizarre eyes. Kagome had never seen such eyes; they were so icy and cool that a strange sensation came over her. She felt a connection with those eyes, but she couldn't explain it.

It was like he had hypnotized her. She hadn't moved a muscle since he grabbed her, and not a sound had escaped her lips. All she could do was stare at him, and see what happened next. His fingers slowly inched up to her neck. Her minded screamed for her to run, scream, or do anything. Despite her brain blaring out orders, all she could do was watch him, and wait for him to snap her frail neck like a twig. Finally, his cold fingers were touching her throat; he gently tilted her head to the side. He bent down, and sunk his sharp fangs into her flesh. Kagome shrieked, the pain was deep, and it felt like twin knives had been embedded into her neck.

Sesshomaru let the girl go, and ran his tongue over his teeth. The blood dripping from them was wiped away. He looked down at the unconscious woman, who had fainted seconds after he bit her. He debated over taking her now or later. He looked down at the frail girl, and realized that she had a lot to learn, and taking her now wouldn't do either of them much good. Knowing full well that she probably wouldn't be able to find her way back to her home, the vampire picked her up. He crept through the shadows to her apartment.

When he reached her front door, he picked up the flower pot that stood next to the door, and reached for the spare key that lay underneath. He knew much about this woman, from her thoughts, to her dreams, and even to her horribly twisted past. He had spent plenty of time studying her, trying to figure out if she was the one. He knew by the connection he'd felt with her before "marking" her, that she was the one he'd been searching for.

He noiselessy opened the old door. He searched for the light switch, but didn't find one. He heard her stirring and knew she was starting to wake. Sesshomaru wanted to be gone when she woke. She would ask to many questions, and he didn't have time to be bothered. She would have to learn to survive on her own, without anyone's help.

He blindly went through the tiny apartment, until he found her bedroon. He pulled the sheets back on her small bed, and laid her in them. He turned to leave, but remembered something. Sesshomaru unchained a necklace from around his neck, and snapped it on to hers. It shined a brilliant purple, before quickly fading. With one last look at the stunning creature, he vanished, as if he'd never been there at all.
