The Assistant

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha, any restaurants, fast food chains, hotels or designer brands.

She hated her job.

She rather do anything else but this. However, she was forced to do it or else her boss would give her a bad reference and force her to work at McDonalds or something similar to that.

Here she was, driving like a maniac down the busy streets of New York, honking her horn as the cars in front of her slugged on by, feeling pressured as she was fetching her boss his lunch, specifically Subway. The bad thing was, she didn’t know the area as they flew in from Japan yesterday and were staying at The Pierre. Her GPS was acting up, rerouting every five seconds, forcing her to turn off the system and ask around with her window down, looking very much like a creeper speaking broken English.

Why couldn’t he order room service, and the hotel had a very nice restaurant downstairs and she was certain if the man had the patience of reading through the menu, he would surely come across something he would like. But no, he saw a commercial and had an urge to eat something nutritious and healthy. He was doing this to get back at her, she imagined, gripping the stirring wheel in a tight grasp, from that one day some weeks ago when she got him decaf instead of black coffee. Kagome scoffed, if he wanted payback, then he was pitiful and that this was an awful punishment. She would probably be on the streets all day since she was already lost.

Gods, she could just imagine his expression, a blank face while lashing out hurtful comments and telling her she was incompetent. During the first couple months, she would, like a crybaby, break down in tears and continue crying throughout the day, but now that she worked for him for three years, she developed a thick skin. Whatever he had to say would just slide off of her and she would continue her duties, ignoring his insults.

At that moment her phone rang. Looking down at her phone since traffic wasn’t moving at all, she noticed that it was her boss.

She quickly answered. “Yes Taisho-san?”

“What is taking you so long to retrieve my meal?” He frostily asked and Kagome took the phone away from her ear for a second to glare at it. “I told you nearly an hour ago and you are still not back at the hotel.”

“I apologize sir, there’s traffic.”

“Come back, I have change my mind about Subway, I have another errand to give you.”

“Yes s--” She didn’t get a change to reply before a beep was heard, signaling that the man hanged up on her. She gave a sigh, wondering why he was torturing her. He could have told what that errand was instead driving all the way back to the hotel just to go out again.

She arrived at the hotel in forty-five minutes and she was reluctant to enter his room as she already knew how he was going to react. But she had to go up there eventually and she braced herself. Once up, she stood outside the door, her reluctance coming through again, and she shuffled her feet. Mustering the courage, she knocked on the door, jumping a bit when it opened a second later.

Her boss was at the door, a stoic glare in his eyes as his hair dripped and trails of moisture glistened his bare, chiseled chest, but Kagome wasn’t phased by it, having endure the many times he blatantly showed his nudity in the early months. Moron, She insulted him in her mind, knowing the reason behind his actions. He was stupid if he thought she was that type of girl, sure she blushed a few times before, but now she was used to it.

“What took you so long?”

“Sorry sir, traffic here is worst than Tokyo.”

“I don’t want to hear your excuses, my half-brother lives here, make reservation at a restaurant.” He dismissed what she said and ordered her to do a task. She hated when he did that, it made her feel insignificant. But she wouldn’t dare talk back at him, she was the only assistant he had at the moment as he fired the other two some months ago. And she heard they could barely get any jobs with the reference Sesshomaru Taisho made about their work skills.

He was a cold-hearted bastard. His comment of his half-brother was not to reunite familial bonds, but to showoff to the middleclass man. Sesshomaru had an apparent hatred for the younger male, stemming from his father’s legit relationship with a lower-class woman. Pitiful really.

He was rich and famous, a well-known actor from Japan. When she first heard of this job, she was excited, thinking it would be more grand than this. But she was sorely disappointed. She was basically his babysitter. Sure, the pay checks were outstanding, but the benefits for having vacation time off were for one day in an entire year. It was just awful.

Sesshomaru was a pompous jerk, thinking he was a god or something, acting all high and mighty. She wished people could see how he really was, then they would stop putting him on a high pedestal. Role model whatever, Kagome grumpily thought. And maybe she could have her life back and her free will, becoming her own person once more.

Once she booked him his reservations, she could have a couple hours off to celebrate her birthday, not that the man would let her have any time off since he was like a helpless baby, unable to do things properly without her assistance. She just hoped he didn’t call her, asking for something trivial; things like that usually ruins her mood.

She looked through the packets and brochures the agency gave them when they arrived. “Taisho-san, would you rather have your reservations at Aquavit or at Pre Se?”

“I don’t care,” He lounged on his bed, watching TV and flipping through the channels. “I need a suit and call Inuyasha.”

She picked Pre Se since it sounded more appealing than a Nordic restaurant. She made the reservation and called the younger brother to inform him of the arrangements. “Taisho-san, you have plenty of suits.” She tried to tell him, not waiting to make another trip in the hectic streets of the city.

“I suppose my assistant wants me to look indecent to a formal restaurant.” He drawled out nonchalantly, his eyes fixated on the screen instead of her direction. Kagome grinded her teeth, her jaw straining from the pressure. “I want it to be from Yves Saint Laurent.”

“Right away Taisho-san.” She left the room, careful not to slam the door.

She quickly dialed her friend’s number, needing to vent for a couple minutes as she try looking for that godforsaken store, it would take a while before she would come across it.

“Hello?” Came the sleepy voice of Sango, a yawn sounding through the speaker of the phone.

“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?” Kagome asked, feeling a bit guilty now for waking her friend up, she should have been aware of the time zones differences.

“I’m good. I haven’t heard from you in a while, your slave-driver boss must of kept you awfully busy, huh?”

“You have no idea, that idiot have been riding my ass ever since he fired Kagura and Yura a couple months ago.” Kagome growled, waiting impatiently in the elevator and trying to tune out the cheesy music.

“Well I’m not surprised, they couldn’t take care of their own damn selves, how could they take care of someone else?”

“I know that, before the workload wasn’t this much, but now I have to do every single thing.” Kagome sighed through her lips, a migraine forming. “I’m highly stressed out and I can’t take a single break, even sleeping seems impossible. And he’s just a big grumpy bully, bothering me all the time, having me chase after him.”

“Well Kagome you can’t really complain, I told you not to get the job in the first place.” Sango monotonously said, sleep still heavy in her voice.

“I know, I just wished he would just get another assistant, but the bastard is too inconsiderate to think of me or how his demands are affecting me.”

“Well today is your birthday, is he gonna let you have some time off?” The other woman asked.

“Hell no, I didn’t get to celebrate my birthday for the past two years, I was spent the entire day catering to his needs and strangely he gets extra needy on those days.” Kagome mumbled towards the end of her sentence.

“That’s weird, do you think it means something?”

“It doesn’t mean anything, he just trying to make my nonexistent life even worse.” Kagome reasoned with the other woman, hearing that tone of voice anywhere; Sango was trying to overanalyze his behavior.

“How did he behave with those two broads?”

“Mostly he ordered them around, the same with me, but he was being extra vicious with me.” She answered.

“I think he has a crush on you…”

“I don’t think so, I mean he keeps showing off his body to entice me or something, but it doesn't mean anything.”

“What?!”

“Oops.” Kagome hanged up, her face feeling hot after she blurted out something she kept to herself for the past three years. Sango was going to be mad for hanging up on her. But she’ll be okay, she probably gonna be dying trying to find out the details.

She returned a couple hours later, the desired suit in hand. Oddly enough Sesshomaru haven’t called her the entire time she was out and she did find that particularly peculiar. She knocked and Sesshomaru’s manager opened the door, ushering her in. The man took the suit and handed it to the celebrity, while he talked on his cell phone about business.

“Kagome,” This was literally the first time he called her by her first name, usually it would be ‘woman’ or ‘girl’ and here she thought he didn’t knew her name, despite the number of years she worked for him. “I don’t need you tonight.” He bluntly said, fixing his cuff-links and was ready to depart.

Kagome stood stock still as she watched the man with the manager leave the room, the door closing with a firm click. He was definitely acting weird.

But she shrugged her shoulders and retreated to her room attached, feeling the urge to get hammered that night. However, what surprised her was a neatly wrapped gift with a bottle of expensive champagne and a delicious meal waiting for her on the bed. A card was laid nicely in the tray.

She picked it up, noticing the elegant handwriting of Sesshomaru and was astounded that the man gave her this, did something happened to him? Why was he acting weird, he never done anything nice for her, so why was he starting now? He probably bumped his head or something, because the Sesshomaru she knew was an asshole and selfish.

Here’s something that would make the both of us happy in the future,
Happy Birthday Kagome.

That sentence made her apprehensive, she hoped it wasn’t a prank or something, or from someone else, that would have been creepy. Besides, the only one that had access to this room was her and Sesshomaru. She touched the box, marveling at the soft texture of the wrapping paper and the opulent colors. It was probably an expensive gift as she knew Sesshomaru wouldn’t be caught dead going into a common area, his tastes ran too high.

Maybe he’s not a complete asshole, She opened the box and was stunned, frozen to her core.

Inside was an exercising video.

Never mind, he's the biggest asshole I've ever met!
