Outside, snow rages.

Kagome sighs. Howling winds grow louder, branches and icicles scratching her roof with increasing fervor.

She gets out of bed.

One candle then two—dipped tapers settled into brass. She lights them in her hearth and sets them on sills, honey-scented beacons in the dark.

Welcome ye cold, ye lost.

The knock comes before sleep claims her again. “One second.” And when she opens the door, surprised amber stares back.

“Miko?”

He’s taller than she remembers, covered in snow. And like her, he’s a memory out of place in time.

Tears prick. “You.”

She pulls him inside.
