These Moments

It was in these moments that she could forget.  The lure of peace lay just beyond the waking world.  It was in these moments that time no longer mattered.  There were no delusions about controlling one's destiny, or obtaining glory.

The fire consumed the dry wood hungrily so that it could cling to existence from a few more moments.  The soft snores of her traveling companions could be heard under the moon's watchful gaze.

It was in these moments that she would be lost in the blazing fire of the sun while the night blanketed her.

She never understood how this arrangement came about.  Maybe he sensed her need when no one else could, or maybe she made herself too important in his life.  Whatever the reason, she was grateful.

It was in these moments that she felt her pain melt away.  The cold burning sun of his eyes bore through her soul and the aching missing piece seemed to fill.  It was in these moments that she was whole.  Though the lure of spell was strong, tired lids slid closed over the windows to the priestess's soul.

He had stared at her again.  He did not know why he found solace in her gaze.  Solace was a fleeting thing, as would her life be.  However, he found the power he had long since sought in her tortured eyes.

He realized, in a these moments, that power was not attained.  True power was something that only those that had never given it up could weld.  Her sapphire pools had drowned him the first night, and continued to do so every night after.

It was in these moments that the first son of the great Inu no Taisho was humbled by the lure of a time traveling miko's refusal to succumb.
