A mother's tears by weirdlykagome

Family

Disclaimer: Inuyasha, Yashahime and its characters do not belong to me.

This story is going to have all the characters go through a roller-coaster of emotions. Yes, the kids (Towa, Setsuna and Moroha are going to be maternal half-sisters: they would share the same mom) so read this story only if you are comfortable with this idea. The story is a SessKag with a minor InuKag. I am aware a lot of you have not touched Yashahime. I have not watched it completely either. So, I would be changing the plot to tailor to my story. The story will switch from past to present POVs. That is between the girls and their parents. Lol…hope I can pull this through. I am excited!

That being said, Enjoy!

-----Feudal Japan, Present-----

Towa and Setsuna were having a hard time controlling this attack. It was truly the hardest for the kids, even more so for Higurashi Towa. She was a modern girl for God’s sake, a girl who had grown up amongst modern era luxuries and away from the gripping struggles of the feudal era. But now when she was being confronted by one of the most challenging enemies she had fought, she was at her wit’s end. She observed scared when Moroha flew from across the battlefield, suffering the brunt of a major power explosion.

The sisters stood leaning onto each other, supporting each other with the little assurance that they were together. They had come far and did not want to let things slip from their hands when they were so close. The kids were close enough and only if they could walk a little further, they would be close to the secrets that eclipsed their pasts.

A swift movement from their left caught their shared attention as a surge of unadulterated demonic power moved towards them with unpreceded speed. Their eyes widened, their fighting spirit at an end as they huddled closer ready for their end. They understood that they could not shield themselves or fight this attack, it was their end.

When the power was only inches away from them, a most amazing thing occurred, Towa moved her hands as if on reflex, a reflex she had never felt before. A surge of some ancient power welled up from inside of her and came crashing from her extended hand, blinding the surrounding with brilliant blue and green energy. The energies, equally opposing in nature clashed and blended with each other forming a massive force field which repelled the incoming enemy energy.

The clash of ancient powers was too much for the already charged air. A pressure depression in the air caused a massive explosion, throwing the sisters miles away from where they had stood, they passed out instantly.

-------Feudal era, Past------

Kagome’s life had started once again as soon as she had jumped out of the well, a journey which decided her path of choice. Kagome’s choice had never let her down and especially not now when she received the most unexpected news, she was pregnant, with Inuyasha’s child. Kagome was deliriously happy. It felt like her most awaited fairy tale had come true. She was finally going to be a mother, the mother of her first love’s child. A woman could want nothing more.

Inuyasha bounded into Kaede’s hut. He was away on a demon slaying mission in a neighbouring village when someone had brought him the news that his wife had fainted suddenly, in the middle of picking herbs from the medicinal field. He had however been more shocked when he had heard that his hated half-brother had been the one to bring her to Kaede’s house. His heart lodged in his throat, he had left the mission mid-way, asking Miroku to take care of the rest as he ran towards Kaede’s hut, his heart unstable with the fear for his beloved.

Sesshomaru stood outside Kaede’s hut when Inuyasha came crashing into the doorway. Sesshomaru watched dispassionate and bored as the hanyou fussed over his wife. He stood outside the hut as the shuffling inside the hut increased and then the doormat moved as the demon slayer came out, a bright smile on her face.

“Sesshomaru, congratulations you are going to be an uncle!”

Sesshomaru sniffed arrogantly and with a barely decipherable movement of his lips, he replied, “Half-uncle!” and with that, he turned around walking out of Sango’s line of vision.

Sango’s eyes twitched in mild irritation. What sort of family was this child going to have? A rude, foul-mouthed, immature father and a pompous, dispassionate and cynical uncle? Sango shook her head and smiled ruefully, who was she to complain, her own kids had a lecher for a father. Taking a last look at the distance where the white figure of a future uncle had disappeared and giving the last laugh, she re-entered Kaede’s hut anxious about all the arrangements that had to be done.

Inside the hut, Kaede instructed Kagome some sage advice about how to take care during first-time pregnancies. Kagome nodded her head, half part already bored from Kaede’s seemingly never-ending lecture and the other half giddy from the heady feeling of becoming a mother.

What seemed like forever later, Kaede and the rest of the occupants of the hut left, leaving Kagome alone with her husband. Kagome turned away shyly from her husband when he laid a clawed hand on her stomach. She could feel Inuyasha smiling against her hair as he drew her into an affectionate hug, overflowing with so many emotions that it blew away Kagome’s mind with its sheer intensity. Kagome gasped and wondered why after so many years she had still not felt him love her so much as he did now. A new revelation made Kagome’s eyes mist over and she laid a hand over him, thanking the heavens for this child; their bond as a family was already growing stronger.

No more words were needed. Their shared silence and the intimate kissing which followed the news was enough for the couple to realize how much they loved and cherished this unexpected turn of events and that was all a family needed - love and warmth.

Their pleasant days continued with absolutely no interruptions whatsoever. Kagome’s days began with her waking in the morning from weird queasy feelings in her stomach which were followed by an hour of cranky mutterings from the soon to be a mother. The day blended quickly into evenings when the weird and cynical brother-in-law paid them a daily visit, the reason for which, she would never know.

As a result, the evenings were always punctuated with silent staring and tea sipping between a certain and sister-in-law and her brother-in-law. This was however always immediately followed by a heated stare off between two half-brothers as soon as Inuyasha returned from his job. Kagome never got tired of this dysfunctional family, somehow, she just loved this harmony more than she had ever loved her own era. Maybe this was what some meant when they said that your home was with your life partner. Kagome could not agree more.

----------------

One of such daily evening visits was however somehow interrupted as Sesshomaru never showed up. That day Kagome realized how used to she had gotten to these daily visits, she felt lonely that evening until Inuyasha returned home and then she pestered him to go and track his brother down, sending a letter along with him.

Sesshomaru had always made a habit to visit Kagome each evening, this along with the many other things in his life was another obligation. His pack had a rule where the pack leader had to visit pregnant family members, even if she was the wife of his hated brother. This rule was basically there so that the pack leader was always kept informed about the health of the mother and the child. Birth of an Inu child was a laborious process and many times too often the child died due to miscarriage. Therefore, it was the duty of the pack leader to protect and ensure the proper delivery of any new pup of the pack.

But that particular evening he had been too absorbed into some festivity arranged for him at his shiro. The shiro was decorated lavishingly and he had been far too absorbed in the fine wine his subjects had prepared for him along with the seductive dance of some demoness. He had forgotten about the time and had forgone his visit. The festivities, however, had only been mid-way when his half-breed brother had barged into the hall and thrown a parchment at him.

Sesshomaru opened the parchment to come face to face with clear writing, far too clear to have been written by the half-breed himself. He sniffed in pure curiosity. Well, this was unexpected.

To Dear Onii-san,

I have been waiting for your jerk ass to show up the entire evening. How dare you keep me hanging like this, asshole? I thought we were friends and that you kept all your promises. What happened now…huh? Why forget your promise of visiting me every day?

I am sorry! I know I am overreacting, sorry pregnancy hormones. But seriously give me a heads-up next time you decide not to show up. I was worried and then I almost tripped on the kettle because I was worried and was not paying attention to where I was going.

This is all your fault!

I hate you, jerk!

-Kagome.

Delirious from overindulgence in fine wine and pent-up tensions of having to visit his brother every day had a combined effect on Sesshomaru and he threw back his head in sonorous laughter. Inuyasha’s mind boggled when he saw his brother emerge into a fit of mirthful laughter after having read a letter written by Kagome. Inuyasha, as suspicious as ever leaned over Sesshomaru’s shoulder to look at the letter.

The laughter was broken instantly and Sesshomaru held the letter almost possessively, away from Inuyasha’s line of sight. Inuyasha balked from Sesshomaru’s open expressions. The wine had made him loose making him express more; Inuyasha launched into mad laughter.

Sesshomaru irritated from Inuyasha’s cackling and feeling an unknown pull from the letter, left the shiro in the middle of the festivities and raced towards the hut where Kagome resided. He was not deterred even when Inuyasha cursed and followed him, Sesshomaru’s feet were being pulled by some unknown force and he flew across half of Japan, landing in front of Kagome’s hut within a time span of an hour.

The night was deep and the hut mat rustled in Kagome’s hut. Kagome was not asleep yet as her hut was lit by the emergency light, she had brought along with her from the future. Sesshomaru stepped into the threshold of her hut and walked to the hunched form, reading a romance novel.

“Kagome!” He rasped out; his speech slurred from the wine.

“Sesshomaru?” Kagome jumped up when she heard a light whisper of her name. She turned to look at Sesshomaru who stood near her futon, slightly rocking from what she could infer as being drunk. Had her letter disturbed some meeting of his? Then again, she had not expected him to take the letter too seriously. She had expected him to scoff and ignore it completely.

She was in for more surprise however when he suddenly pulled her into his warm embrace, holding her tightly within strong arms.

Sesshomaru sniffed lightly and in an almost apologetic tone he rasped out, “I am sorry!”. Before falling into a deep slumber, however, Sesshomaru realized that he had been missing something the entire evening and no matter how much he drank, he had not been able to fill a small hole in his chest. Now when she was in his arms, smelling full with a pup of his lineage, he found that he was content, so before slipping into oblivion, the last thought he had was, ‘Ahh…so, this was what I had been missing’.

A/n: That is all for this chapter. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am aware I rushed the beginning but believe me, it would slow down as soon as we enter the thick of this story. I hope you guys like the chapter.

Thanks!
