She sighed, slamming the book closed

“I don’t know!” she yelled, “there’s too much to decide.”

Turning to her partner, she giggled as he pulled her close. Burying his face in her hair, he breathed in her scent. “Do not stress, Love.” He whispered softly, “everything will work out wonderfully.”

Pulling away slightly, she kissed his nose “You know, silly, it’s your wedding too?”

She was laying in bed with her fiancé, trying to organize the details of their wedding. Her mom had been rather insistent to have a traditional ceremony, where they would have been perfectly happy signing papers and spending the night together looking at the stars, in each other’s arms, knowing they were officially married. She smiled thinking of how he asked her.

They had been friends for years, best friends even, sharing anything and everything. She saw a different side of him, one he didn’t show to anyone else. To her he was sweet, caring, attentive, and kind- the perfect man, to the rest of the world he was cold, calculated, arrogant, and had a little (well maybe more than a little) of an ego. Two completely different people. No one would believe her if she tried to tell them. But that was alright, he was all hers, and she liked it that way. One day while they were sitting after class- she had been complaining about a guy from her class that had been flirting with her, and rather insistently asking her out. Sesshomaru had not answered her complaining, or even seemed to be listening.

She had finally had enough of his grumpiness and told him to call her when he figured his shit out. When he finally called her, he wouldn’t tell her anything, only asked if she would meet him at their usual tree. Where she found him sitting, eyes closed, face to the sky. He didn't answer when she said 'hi' and sat down. After a few minutes, not wanting to deal with his bad mood again, she got up to leave when he spoke;

“Kagome, this is hard for me to say, I am not… good with words.” He reached for her hand, stroking it, not looking up at her. “I have long thought you the most generous heart and kindest soul in the world. You’re selfless and loving and loyal. I realize now that you are exactly who I pictured spending the rest of my life with.” He finally looked up, his eyes full of worry and doubt. “Please tell me if it is at all possible for you to feel the same way.”

He looked so dear, so vulnerable, so nervous, his golden eyes made her heart melt. His words taking her breath away, she could not imagine what her expression was. He dropped her hand and looked at the ground, mumbling, “I guess that’s my answer.”

She dropped to her knees, taking his face in her hands, making him look at her. “Of course, it is possible!” Looking deep into his eyes, trying to express all the emotions going through her head and heart. Pulling him close, she could feel his heart beating. “You have made me the happiest man alive. I was so worried that you would say no."

“Oh Sesshomaru, I have loved you since the beginning of college, but did not want to jeopardize our friendship.” She was still holding him tight against her, resting her head on his shoulder. Happy to stay like that for hours as they settled against the tree again in comfortable silence.

Eventually pulling away, Kagome asked what brought on such desperation.

She didn’t think he was capable of such a thing; Sesshomaru blushed. Looking at their hands in his lap, he answered “Remember Hojo today, flirting during class and asking you out for the 3rd time this week?” She nodded, he scratched the back of his neck, “well, I did not like it. I kept telling myself it didn’t matter, we were just friends, but I could not shake this feeling.” he was shaking his head.

” When I got home, my father told me I was impossible to deal with. I ended up spending the whole night outside looking up at the moon and stars like tonight. Around midnight, Myoga showed up and told me he could feel my brooding from miles away,” he chuckled under his breath. “He and I spoke until dawn, I told him everything. What happened, my thoughts and worries. He’s the one who told me that I should not stay quiet, not if I truly loved you, ‘Do not to play the best friend on the off chance you’d be happier with someone else’ he said.”

After that phenomenal speech, Kagome found she had no words. She had turned to face him and looking into his eyes, he still had a look of worry in them.

Removing her hands from his brought his gaze back to her. Slowly, she placed a hand on the side of his face pulling him close, worried he may choose to pull away, she closed the distance between their lips.

It was a gentle kiss, a promise, that she was not going anywhere. Which had been followed by another and another, each more desperate than the last.

And since that day they had been inseparable, their friends saying it was like a fairy tale, and that some of them had secretly hoped they would be a ‘love story’ as it were.

Recently, they had been talking about what it truly meant to be together, as they were each finishing their programs in college, and would have to figure out how to actually live together

*********************

Today had been a good day, they had spoken to her mother, she had approved of the match and was overjoyed that her daughter might finally give her grandbabies (how embarrassing that conversation had been).

Sesshomaru kissed her neck, rousing her from her thoughts.

“Yes, I am aware, but if it were up to me, we would sign the documents and be one by the end of the night.” He continued to kiss along her jaw to prove his point.

“Ok, ok!” She laughed, “I get it.” Kissing him softly on the lips, placing her hand on his chest. He had honoured her request to wait until they were married to have sex. She didn’t know why, but it felt important to her. Probably growing up in a traditional family had somehow buried the idea in her brain. He had been very understanding, however, asked if he could still hold her while they slept. Putting the bridal book on the nightstand, he pulled her down, held her to his heart, and closed his eyes. Thinking nothing could go wrong with her at his side.
