It sounds like a curse plague. But those plagues are nasty. I hope that Kagome figures out whats going on. Plagues give me the creeps. As long as they don't come back as zombies, then that's not too bad. Zombies would make the plague 1000 times worse! Zombies eat people. I don't like to be food, thank you very much. Please don't let them be zombies. Anything but Zombies. I don't really like Zombies.

the last word of the chapter is it supposed to be plague?  pelage is a mammal's coat of fur or wool, which would make an ironic bit of sense. =D

Rumiko Takahashi has actually said that it's a mokomoko, manifestation of his ki, on this issue. The blood in that picture from the link posted is from when his arm is cut off...it bled onto the tail. And while that sucks horribly because most people (including me) wish it was a tail, it unfortunately is not, but yes, harming it harms him...it's kinda conviluded really...

Boa? Tail? Pelt? Who cares Kagome still gets to snuggle it. And that's all that matters
