So I was re-reading and found your question about the inspiration...Well, lots of people have tried to guess, the one I think makes more sense is the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, also called Great Pyrenees in the US and Canada, appearance and character like, at least. It's a huge dog, an ancient race, a mountain molossoid, distantly related to for instance the St. Bernard and the Newfoundland dog, and they all probably come from the Tibetan Mastiff, from  the time of the Roman Empire or so.

I've also read about him being a Poodle, but well, maybe, maybe a mix? But poodles have a sight hound / warren hound body shape (under all that hair), made for speed and agility not strength. You'll have to look for white unshaved untrimmed standard poodles and judge for yourself. It's quite difficult to find a picture without their face shaved, maybe if you look for puppies (?).

It's absurd, ludicrous, it made sense long ago since they were used as water (bird) hunters and retrievers and the heaviness of their wet hair would take them down, make them drown, tire too much -I'm talking about working dogs who would hunt for hours- and or made them sick when it was cold, that's why they started shaving them, they soon realised that shaving them too much also made them sick (not enough hair to protect them from cold winds and such) and that's why they started these silly looks: to protect the chest, neck, main joints, etc. Now it's just a foolish trend really. The face, I understand, is to keep eye crust in check, specially for white and fair-haired ones.

This chapter made me wonder about a few things. I'm curious to what the inner thoughts of Sesshomaru would be like. I know now would be a weird time for Sesshomaru to reflect on his thoughts/feelings regarding having a mate and kid, but I can't recall if that has been explored the way it has for Kagome. On the outside it seems like he is caring on with life and he is adjusting to things as they come. What does it really mean for Sesshomaru to work on not being like his father. I might need to read the story again to see if that has already been answered. Sounds like this is an important conversation between Sesshomaru and Kagome. I guess we will have to find out the kind of healing takes place from this moment.
